Description:

The Department of Surgery (Central Region) at Hackensack Meridian Health is inviting applications for the position of Advanced Thoracic Surgery Fellow in the Division of Thoracic surgery. The program is under the leadership of Dr Faiz Bhora, Regional Chairman of Surgery and Division Chief of Thoracic Surgery, and Dr Kostantinos Poulikidis, Program Director of the Advanced Thoracic Surgery Fellowship.

The program is ideal for candidates who have completed an accredited fellowship and are seeking advanced training in complex thoracic surgery. Residents seeking to apply to accredited thoracic fellowships in the future, are also welcome to apply. There will be extensive experience in advanced robotic surgery focusing on anatomic resections and segmentectomy using advanced preoperative 3D planning, tracheal surgery, complex foregut and esophageal surgery, and minimally invasive and hybrid lung volume reduction surgery. In currently utilizing 4 dedicated XI robots, 2 DV5 robots, and two seperate robot bronchoscope systems. ENT and interventional pulmonary are also integrated in the Division of Thoracic Surgery, providing the advanced fellow with an incredibly robust and 360 degree experience.

The Division of Thoracic Surgery consists of three general thoracic surgeons. The central region of Hackensack Meridian Health consists of three hospitals of which JFK University Medical Center is the tertiary academic referral center. HMH is the largest health system in the state of New Jersey, comprising 18 hospitals, a renowned medical school (Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine) and a free standing, regionally recognized research institute (Center for Discovery and Innovation). Fellows will also recieve clinical appointment in the school of medicine.

Fellows will be trained in multi-disciplinary care and communication with our pulmonologists, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists and primary care physicians. Fellows will participate in tumor boards, nodule conferences and morbidity and mortality conferences. There are ample opportunities to participate in clinical and basic science research in an nationally recognized, well funded lab currently with a post-doctoral research fellow and senior research scientist.

A mentorship model will be in place to allow fellows to meet on a regular basis to guide their education and future as a practicing surgeon. At the end of the fellowship, fellows will be trained to become independent thoracic surgeons.

    As a member of our thoracic surgery clinic at the Advanced Lung and Airway Center at JFK University Medical Center, the fellow collaborates closely with the thoracic surgeons throughout the week. Engaging with the skilled nurse practitioners, they navigate through a bustling clinic environment, encountering a diverse array of thoracic cases. From routine follow-ups to complex procedures, the fellow's involvement ensures comprehensive care for patients across all aspects of thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology.

Thoracic department employs a post-doctoral research fellow and a research scientist performing clinical outcomes research as well as basic science research. Fellow will be encouraged to publish and present throughout the year.
