Description:

LAHEY HOSPITAL AND MEDICAL CENTER offers a one year bariatric fellowship based in the department of General Surgery.  Lahey is a major teaching hospital for UMASS Medical School, located in Burlington, MA. The focus of the experience is minimally invasive bariatric surgery, however, there are opportunities to perform additional advanced laparoscopic cases depending on interest and ability. Case volume is about 250 bariatric cases with approximately 35% bypass and the rest divided between sleeve gastrectomy, revisional bariatric surgery and duodenal switch. Both laparoscopic and robotic approaches are taught. The fellow's schedule will include 3 days per week in the operating room, 1-2 days per week in the clinic, and 1/2 to 1 day per week spent doing research. The fellow will have teaching responsibilities that will include supervision of junior residents and medical students in skills training in the Simulation Center, on rounds and in the operating room. The fellow will help manage bariatric emergencies with a home call schedule that they can design at their convenience. They will be asked to assist in the OR for any bariatric emergency that needs intervention, only if they are available.  Also, just like the opportunities to participate in non-bariatric general surgical cases, opportunities also exist for independent management of on-call surgical emergencies with staff back-up.

Academic work (which includes teaching and research) is required and supported through monthly meetings and a generous travel stipend which will cover expenses associated with all regional and national meetings where works are accepted.

Special features of this program include focus on learning over service.  Fellows will learn by actually doing the entire operation first, and then have ample opportunity to teach assist residents.  We provide access to multiple educational opportunities including mentoring your learning in our simulation center, outstanding conferences and educational opportunities and a high caliber general surgery residency program on site. In addition, as sleeve gastrectomy has surpassed gastric bypass as the most common procedure nationwide, we remain able and committed to provide the highest experience in gastric bypass surgery in our area.  We are also one of the few fellowships that is offering experience with the duodenal switch.  Our team is dedicated to training surgeons in how to provide the highest levels of care and meet the highest standards of excellence. We look forward to working with the appropriate candidate.
