Description:

The colorectal fellowship programs are intended for trainees who have successfully completed or intend to complete a surgery residency program accredited by the ACGME. Successful completion of a Fellowship Council accredited colorectal surgery fellowship DOES NOT under any circumstances qualify for eligibility for certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.

The Lankenau Medical Center MIS/Colorectal Fellowship provides intensive instruction in minimally invasive surgical approaches to the treatment of a broad spectrum of colorectal disorders with emphasis on advanced management of rectal cancer.

The hallmark of our work is sphincter preservation surgery for the treatment of very low rectal cancers as part of a multimodal treatment program. Surgical techniques include laparoscopy, robotic surgery including XI, DV5, and Single Port Robot including transanal single port robot.  Our prospectively maintained databases are a rich resource for ongoing clinical research. The marriage of this experience with laparoscopic approaches and robotic techniques offers a unique training opportunity. This fellowship is ideal for candidates who have completed general surgery residency, colorectal, or surgical oncology fellowship. While subspecialty training is not a prerequisite for acceptance into the program, an interest in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery or rectal cancer is essential. The fellow should expect to see a wide variety of unusual colorectal problems in addition to colorectal cancer. As a tertiary referral center for colorectal disorders, a large proportion of the cases are reoperative, deep pelvic operations. Because of our expertise operating in the irradiated pelvis, we are often referred with complications of pelvic radiotherapy. Depending on the fellow's background, there is ample opportunity to become expert in lower GI endoscopy. The fellow plays a primary role teaching residents and medical students in addition to overall patient management. We have state-of-the-art minimally invasive operating suites. The multi-million dollar Annenberg Education Center is a valuable resource for multi-disciplinary and multi-site video conferences and is where the Annual International Rectal Cancer Consensus Conference is convened. Clinical research is central to the fellowship's mission, and the fellow is encouraged to present work at national and international meetings.

We have 6 minimally invasive suites, dedicated simulation room with DV-5 Simulator, and a multimillion dollar Annenberg Educational Center which are heavily used in the education of practicing surgeons in the techniques of laparoscopic colectomy. The fellow will be intimately involved in these projects.

The Fellowship begins on August 1 and ends on July 31 of each year.
