Description:
This is a 2 year Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Fellowship program. The group of supervising surgeons consists of 5 HPB/Liver transplant surgeons who also participate in organ retrieval. Vancouver General Hospital is the only liver transplant centre in the province of British Columbia with a large catchment area. It also serves as a quartenary trauma centre. The fellows will participate in a high volume of HPB benign/oncology cases, procurements and liver transplantation. We believe in mentoring and supporting our fellows in a graduated process. They are considered to be the leaders of the team, and key component of clinical care. There is a graduated level of responsibility and autonomy that occurs during your training, and the expectation is proficiency with major HPB surgeries, retrievals and liver transplant surgery.
Expected volume of cases per fellow with 2 fellows per year, surpasses the AHPBA caseload requirements.
We have weekly teaching rounds, regular Morbidity and Mortality rounds and also recommend our fellows to attend our weekly Liver and Pancreas tumor board rounds. There are opportunities to attend liver transplant and HPB clinics. There is also opportunity for research in the areas of transplantation and HPB and strong encouragement to publish. We have an ongoing prospective pancreas cancer and liver transplant database as a source of data for publications.
Overall liver transplant cases: 100 plus liver transplants, 160 procurements (80-100 performed by HPB surgeons)
Overall HPB Cases annual: 400+
Liver 160, includes at least 100 major hepatectomies (in situ donor, hemi, righ posterior, central or trisectionectomy)
Pancreas resection 140, includes 80-100 pancreaticoduodenectomies, with rest being distal pancreatectomy, total pancreatectomy, debridement/drainage procedures
• Biliary Tract 40
