Description:

The Complex Gastrointestinal (CGI) Surgery Fellowship at Methodist Richardson Medical Center (MRMC) has been developed to provide exposure and in depth experience to open, endoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches to complex foregut, midgut, and hindgut procedures as a supplement to the general surgery residency training. The diverse and supportive faculty will allow the fellow to experience a wide variety of surgical disease processes including foregut, midgut, hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB), colorectal, and complex abdominal wall reconstruction cases. There is an especially large volume of foregut and HPB cases performed at MRMC, allowing for a symbiotic training track along with the HPB fellow. In addition, we have a strong GI faculty without a competing GI fellowship which will allow for a robust endoscopy rotation with exposure to ERCP and EUS. The fellows share in-patient duties with the HPB fellow and follow their patients to ensure continuity of care by participating in weekly outpatient clinics, operations, and inpatient admissions. The fellow will be intimately involved in weekly didactic meetings, morbidity and mortality conferences, GI conferences, tumor boards, and other relevant educational gatherings.

In addition to the robust clinical experience, the fellow is expected to perform clinical and outcomes research. The fellow will have ample resources and support to prepare abstracts and manuscripts for peer reviewed journals for publication as well as the opportunity to present at regional and national meetings such as SSAT, AHPBA, and SAGES. We expect at least two manuscripts to be submitted and published during the fellow's time.

The aim of this fellowship is to bridge the gap between general surgery residency and the next step in the candidate’s career, whether it is to prepare the trainee for a busy practice in complex GI surgery. The faculty feel that this could be in an academic setting or in a large community setting - but we expect that the fellow will remain actively involved in academic endeavors with a commitment to discovery and inquisitive practice. The graduate felow should be the "go to" person in this work enviorment.
