Description:
Colorectal Fellowship Program- Disclaimer The Advanced Colon and Rectal Fellowship program is accredited through the Fellowship Council. This training program is intended for trainees who have successfully completed an ACGME General Surgery Residency and who want to fine tune their skills in abdominal surgery as a general surgeon or it is intended for the board eligible general surgeon after this training, to complete a colorectal surgery residency program accredited by the ACGME. Successful completion of a Fellowship Council accredited colorectal surgery fellowship DOES NOT under any circumstances qualify for eligibility for certification by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
This is primarily a one year clinical fellowship in advanced colon and rectal surgery and is offered at the sponsoring institution at Orlando Health, Colon & Rectal Institute. The main objectives for the fellowship program is to become a master of advanced pelvic surgery in the area of colon and rectal through open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
The colon & rectal fellow is required to attend all of the department conferences which is every Thursday morning. The fellows are encouraged to participate in investigative and clinical research studies, and are expected to submit an abstract to either SAGES, SLS, or DDW. A formal research conference is scheduled every month to review the fellow's progress which is moderated by Dr. Marco Ferrara. Papers are also submitted for publication to peer review journals.

Clinical Outpatient Experience
Time is spent in private practice offices, medical education clinic, endoscopy unit, emergency department and operating theater. For patients in the hospital, the fellow is responsible for the admission orders, the history and physical examinations, preoperative orders, postoperative orders, progress notes, operative dictations and discharge summaries. The fellow gains a complete familiarity with the pre and post-operative management of patients and provides care for his or her post-operative patients until discharge, or until the patients’ postoperative conditions are stable and only non-surgical issues remain.
The fellows have access to an outpatient surgical facility associated with the Colon & Rectal Clinic of Orlando where outpatient operative care and diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures are performed. This gives the fellow experience in a large number of endoscopy and outpatient anorectal surgeries. Approximately 2100 diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopies and 1800 anorectal surgeries are performed annually which exposes the resident to essential colon and rectal disorders and treatment in anorectal and perineal procedures. Performing procedures at this facility also gives the resident a high level of skill for the administration of conscious sedation and local anesthesia. Outpatient surgery is also performed at the Orlando Regional Medical Center and Florida Hospital outpatient facility.
Research/Scholarship Resources
The fellows are encouraged to participate in investigative and clinical research studies. Starting the first month of the program, the fellows are encouraged to select research topics for abstract preparation to submit to ASCRS, SAGES, SLS, and DDW. A formal research conference is scheduled every month to review the fellow's progress which is moderated by Drs. Gallagher and Ferrara. In addition, several research meetings are added a couple times a week to check on the fellow's progress before the fellows presents at a national meeting. Papers are also submitted for publication to peer review journals.
