Description:

This Fellowship is a one year clinical fellowship that focuses on Foregut Surgery, Bariatric Surgery, and Hernia Surgery.  This includes balanced training on both the laparoscopic and robotic platfoms.  

The program is based at the University of Tenneesee Graduate School of Medicine located in Knoxville, Tennessee.  The fellowship is hosted by the Department of Surgery and is complimentary to the General Surgery Residency Program, which gradutes 6 chiefs annually.  The UT GSM is a distinct program separate from UT surgery programs at Memphis and Chattanooga. All of the fellowship program experience takes place at the flagship University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, adjacent to the main campus of the University of Tennessee.

This program provides the unique opportunity for both advanced laparoscopic and robotic clinical training for bariatric and general surgery procedures. Additionally, the fellow is directly involved in the developement and implimentation of robotics educational curriculum for general surgical residents.  Our clinical and educational opportunities allow for eligibility for both SAGES and ASMBS certification. An additional benefit to our fellowship is that we provide a true transition to practice model. Our fellow takes attending general surgery call three times a month. They also have their own clinic where they see post op patients and new patients allowing them to book their own cases. The balance of clinical and educational opportunies makes this innovative fellowship unique amoungst its peers.

Medical School Requirements:

    We accept graduates of U.S. or Canadian Medical Schools and Foreign Medical Schools
    We accept graduates of Foreign Medical Schools only if ECFMG Certified

Examinations and Certifications:

    Applicants must have passed the USMLE/COMLEX Step 1, 2, & 3 exams
    Applicants must have had at least 2 years of prior training in an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship (or Canadian equivalent)
    Applicants who are ABS or Canadian Board Eligible or Certified
    Applicants must have had at least 2 years of prior training in an AOA (American Osteopathic Association) accredited residency or fellowship
    Applicants must be AOBS (American Osteopathic Board of Surgery) eligible or certified

 

Licensure Requirements and Information:

As a clinical instructor, a valid and current Tennesee state liscence is required as is full hospital credentialing for appropriate privileges.  Once matched, our program will assist the fellow in completing all state and local documents for liscensure and credentialing.

Clinical Outpatient Experience

Fellows will be required to attend 2 (1/2day) office clinics weekly.  This will provide 75 to 100 outpatient evalautions, both pre-operative and post-operative care plans.

Research/Scholarship Resources

Clinical and Simulation based research activites are currently active in the MIS division.  Fellow will be expexted to generate denovo research projects and also be a facilitator of resident and medical student research projects.
