Description:
This is a one year fellowship program that is available for candidates desiring additional training in advanced minimally invasive and gastrointestinal surgery that will lead to certification by the Fellowship Council. The overall goal of the fellowship is to develop academic general surgeons with interest in advanced gastrointestinal surgical management and techniques. The program will teach advanced operative skills and patient management. It will further develop clinical research and teaching skills. The objectives of the fellowship are as follows: Develop and enhance operative technique and clinical skills in the pre and postoperative management in advanced gastrointestinal, hernia and hepatopancreatobiliary surgery with a major emphasis on minimally invasive techniques and emerging technology. Development and implementation of research projects related to the content areas of the fellowship. Obtain experience in techniques and application of basic and clinical science in the field of minimally invasive surgery, hernia surgery, malignancies of the GI track, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, flexible endoscopic techniques, and nutritional management. Manuscript preparation, poster preparation, oral presentation, and/or book chapter preparation are expected. Obtain experience in development and application of advanced surgical technologies within the University of Florida Center for Simulation Education & Safety Research (CSESaR). A major programmatic focus of the fellowship will allow the unique opportunity to obtain experience in the development and application of simulation and other skills training techniques in CSESaR. Expectations include: teaching and rounds with residents, medical student lectures, presentation and coordination of general surgery conferences, and the development and implementation of research projects related to the content areas of the fellowship. The accepted fellow will gain significant experience in laparoscopic upper GI, colorectal, hernia, solid organ, and thoracic procedures (optional). The fellow will also learn techniques in robotic assisted laparoscopic and thoracoscopic operations. The fellow will also be exposed to complex open gastrointestinal and hepatopancreaticobiliary procedures. The fellow will participate in all of the major teaching conferences of the Department of Surgery and will obtain experience in educational methods for describing and teaching techniques related to the content areas of the fellowship. This includes teaching basic laparoscopy to junior residents in the OR and laboratory setting, and assistance with GI surgical, laparoscopic, and endoscopic courses and conferences hosted by the Department of Surgery. The delivery of one surgical grand rounds presentation during the academic year of training is required. During the course of the year, the fellow will function in a supervisory role, with attending back-up, for some general surgery cases. Operative experience will take place at UF Health Jacksonville, a 695 bed teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville (UFCOM-J) with 20 operating rooms including four state-of-the-art videoscopic designated rooms with endoscopic integration. Two of the rooms are also configured for robotic surgery. The fellow will be appointed as an Instructor in Clinical Surgery. Salary and benefits will be equivalent to ACGME regional standards appropriate for the PGY-6 level of training. Benefits, insurance, and other fringe benefits are per UFCOM guidelines. Parking is free. Call will be taken from home and will average one day out of five and one weekend each month. Fellows always have attending backup. The management of assigned patients and assistance with emergencies is expected. Routine rounding on all patients with whom the fellow has had direct involvement is required. Support services and systems are in place to assure that fellows do not spend an inordinate amount of time in non-educational activities that can be conducted properly by other personnel. Work hours will be limited according to the institutional guidelines as mandated by the ACGME. The fellowship is approved by the UFCOM-J Graduate Medical Education program.
