Acute Care & Elective General Surgeon

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Madison, WI

Institution Logo

The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is seeking an exceptional general surgeon to join the faculty of a dynamic and growing Division of Acute Care and Regional General Surgery. Our Division provides emergency general surgery, trauma and burn services at UW Health, and elective general surgery services to the Madison area UW affiliated hospitals.

The Department of Surgery consists of more than 140 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding.

The School of Medicine and Public Health has a deep and profound commitment to diversity as a valuable means for eliminating health disparities. As such, we strongly encourage applications from candidates who foster and promote the values of diversity and inclusion.
Principal duties:
The Acute Care & Elective General Surgeon will be based primarily at Unity Point Meriter hospital. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to join a well-established group of general surgeons and expand the practice. Additional responsibility is to cover the Emergency General Surgery service at Meriter Hospital on an average of 1 in 8-week basis.

The primary site of this position will be at Unity Point Meriter Hospital. UP-Meriter hospital runs 11 operating rooms daily including specialty services in Vascular, orthopedic surgery, ophthalmology, GYN, plastic surgery and other subspecialties. As a UW affiliate, the emergency general surgery service at UP-Meriter is supported by 4-6 house staff (1-2PG1, 1PGY2, 1 PGY 4, 1 PG5, and occasionally a PGY 3). Four Advance practice Providers provide support as surgical assistants, on rounds and in clinic. The Meriter EGS service cares for all unplanned surgical admissions and provides inpatient consultations as needed.

A principal duty of this position is developing relationships with UW Health regional partners through building relationships and establishing referral protocols in order to partner in providing general surgery services to those organizations. Through these partnerships, the Division of Acute Care and Regional General Surgery seeks to reduce disparities in surgical access for patients in rural areas of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. The successful candidate will display a willingness and desire to work across a health care system to provide care across communities.

The successful candidate will demonstrate qualifications and commitment delivering high-quality patient care. In addition, competitive candidates will be motivated for clinical teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows. Candidates interested in the CHS track will have demonstrated the ability to successfully develop a scholarly clinical, outcomes, translational, or basic science research program.

The breakdown of duties is dependent on the track the faculty member is hired. This candidate will also participate in professional, public, and university service.
