Guidelines and Article Types for Submission to General Surgery News
All articles should be first authored by an individual currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a fellowship program; articles may optionally be co-authored by Fellowship Council Program Directors or other senior authors.
The article should be written from the perspective of the fellow about a particular topic, emphasizing their role or view. Articles should be 1000 – 1500 words in length and may optionally include up to 5 references. Articles will be reviewed by members of the Fellowship Council Communications Committee and authors may need to respond to editorial changes. The fellow should submit a photograph to accompany their article.
Article Types:
- Fellowship Issues. This article may include any relevant aspects of fellowship training, including how fellowships relate to training in advanced gastrointestinal or laparoscopic surgery, why fellowships are important, what aspects of fellowship training are valuable, what aspects of fellowship training deserve more attention, aspects of the fellowship process (match, interview, training, caseloads, case types, job search) that merit discussion, how fellowships are viewed by residency program directors and other national societies, or any other pertinent issue.
- Fellowship Perspectives on National Initiatives. This article should describe the fellow’s perspective on any national issues facing advanced gastrointestinal or laparoscopic surgery. Topics may include pay-for-performance, ethical issues, competency initiatives, centers of excellence processes, reimbursement, malpractice, regional education institutes, core curricula, RRC requirements, patient safety, practice guidelines, etc.
- Interesting Work. This article may describe any unique clinical or research work with which the fellow is involved. Examples may include novel procedures, new approaches, clinical outcomes studies, educational studies, survey studies, basic science studies, etc. Descriptions of work in progress as well as summaries of completed investigations are acceptable.
- Fellowship Council Events. This article may describe symposia or other events held by the Fellowship Council, written from the perspective of the fellow on the topics covered or about the nature of the event and its impact on the fellow.
