Minimally Invasive/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at the Hospital of Saint Raphael

A one-year clinical fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery is offered at the Hospital of Saint Raphael beginning July 1. The program is designed for individuals wishing to pursue a career in General Surgery and focuses on aspects of minimally invasive surgery that extend beyond the curriculum of a General Surgery residency. The program began on in 2005 and we have had 1 clinical fellow per year since that time.  We have developed a strong program in both advanced minimally invasive surgery and bariatric surgery and offer a strong educational program to a fellow interested in obtaining these skills. The fellowship consists of 1 person per year.  All fellows have completed a general surgery residency and are either board certified or board eligible through the American Board of Surgery.  The major goal of the fellowship is to develop knowledgeable, skillful, and caring clinical surgeons. At the conclusion of the 1 year fellowship, we expect the graduating fellow to be proficient in all aspects of advanced laparoscopic surgery. We also expect the fellow to be well versed in the patient evaluation as well as management for the morbidly obese patient. The fellow has clinical responsibilities for the entire year. The clinical rotations are modified to suit the fellow’s particular interests, but include at a minimum, laparoscopic surgery of the following: esophagus, stomach, intestine/colon, adrenal gland, biliary tract, liver, and spleen. The program also includes laparoscopic inguinal and ventral hernia repair and endoscopy.  Through the Center for Obesity Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael, fellowship training includes pre-operative, intra-operative (laparoscopic and open), and post-operative care of the morbidly obese patient. During each rotation, the fellow works directly with an attending for that rotation in addition to the general surgery residents. There is no interaction with the Chief Residents, to avoid conflicts. There is direct involvement in patient care including taking junior faculty call. There will be no “in house” call.  The fellow will serve as a liaison between the attending and the residents when there is potential gain for both the fellow and the residents. The fellow is required to be actively involved in ongoing clinical research. He/she will complete at least 1 research project that is submitted for presentation at a regional or national meeting and 1 paper must be submitted for publication. Given that the fellowship is only 1 year in duration, the presentation and/or paper may not be completed by the end of the fellowship. The fellowship is a non-accredited year of experience and is meant to supplement and a General Surgery accredited residency. Candidates are expected to be enrolled in or have completed a General Surgery residency program. Interested applicants should contact Steven M. Yood, MD, MPH, FACS at either syood@srhs.org or 203-776-4677.

MIS/Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at USF Department of Surgery, Tampa General Hospital

We have an unexpected opening for a 1-2 year fellowship position in MIS/Bariatric surgery starting July 1, 2009. This is a primarily clinical bariatric and advanced GI surgery fellowship. The fellowship is accredited by the MIS Council. The positions is fully-funded and available to board certified/eligible applicants interested in minimally invasive surgery. The program is a 'Center of Excellence' for bariatric surgery designated by the ASMBS and JCAHO. This fellowship will provide comprehensive training in the surgical management of obesity and GI disorders with an emphasis on laparoscopic gastric bypass and Lap-Band, revisional bariatric and foregut surgery, as well as full participation in an inter-disciplinary team for the treatment of obesity. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based outcomes and clinical research. The Fellows will participate in all aspects of in- and out-patient care and the daily running of a clinical practice. In addition, the Fellows are expected to participate in clinical research projects based on our large prospective database and to present their data at national meetings. We utilize state of the art laparoendoscopic suites and dedicated OR teams in a large university affiliated tertiary referral center and have at our disposal a large wet lab. Upon completion of training, Fellows will be able to establish and build comprehensive programs for the treatment of obesity and minimally invasive surgery. Fellows will learn leadership skills and business development so they will be equipped to become leaders in their field.
